The Notre Dame Educational System

The world-renowned University of Notre Dame is not just known for its famous “Fighting Irish” sports teams! In the 1800s, Notre Dame started with a small classroom of two, located in a small log chapel on Lake St. Mary in Notre Dame, Indiana, which is just a few miles from South Bend, Indiana and only a few miles from the Michigan border. Over the years, Notre Dame has grown into one of the most highly respected educational systems in the country.

With its base of combining a religious foundation with its academics, this university has continued to flourish in reaching heights of excellence. Notre Dame is now a campus on some 1200+ acres that features five different colleges, offering an abundance of degree programs, both in undergraduate and graduate study programs, that have been recognized as some of the best in the nation. The five separate units are the College of Arts and Letters, the College of Science, the College of Engineering, the Mendoza College of Business, the School of Law, and the School of Architecture, each of which are recognized for their excellent course of study, and some of which incorporate a certain amount of study to be done abroad.

The Notre Dame library system is considered one of the top 100 largest libraries in the country, with the majority of the volumes housed in the 14-story Theodore M. Hesburgh Library. There are branch libraries found in each of the individual colleges, which make a collective total of some 3 million volumes available throughout the university.

Notre Dame has always been considered one of the leading Catholic universities, and still maintains a certain code of conduct throughout the campus. Even with some 11,000+ students, every aspect of the campus is based on respect for studies and one’s faith.
