Extra Points for Jesus

The King of Kings statue, also referred to as "drowning Jesus," is akin to the mural on the outer wall of the Hesburgh Library on the Notre Dame University campus. This mural covers the entire wall of the building and can be seen by reflection in a rectangular pool below. Both of these likenesses of Jesus have been referred to as Touchdown Jesus.

King of Kings stands 62 feet at a weight of 16,000 pounds. The mosaic on Hesburgh Library is entitled The Word of Life. Both of these magnificent works of art depict Jesus with both arms held high above his head performing the touchdown signal so familiar to football fans. The mural can be seen from inside the Notre Dame Stadium which may contribute to the harmony displayed by the Notre Dame players and fans and the opposing teams. The top half of the mural with Jesus' hands held high can be seen clearly above the top bleacher.

The King of Kings statue sits in front of the Solid Rock Church in Monroe, Ohio. Referred to as "drowning Jesus," the statue is from waist up suspended in a pool of water. King of Kings is located north of Cincinnati where it is visible from the I-75 expressway. The King of Kings statue is said to be the largest sculpture of Christ in America.

How fitting that these two depictions of Jesus Christ signaling a touchdown for mankind are located where so many people can see them and be in awe of their magnificence.
