Athletic Programs at Notre Dame

The University of Notre Dame, lays upon 1,250 acres located in Notre Dame, Indiana. By today’s standards, they have some of the best of the nation’s athletic facilities for their varsity players. Over the last 20 years, the University of Notre Dame is not only known for their academics but their athletics as well. The growth of their programs has been strong. In 1970, they added women’s athletics. They currently have twenty-six varsity sports and students can compete in twenty–four club sports and sixty-four intramural sports. There are numerous fitness activities and family programs. They even have both an indoor and an outdoor track and field.

The University of Notre Dame has a nickname for their athletes; it is the “Fighting Irish”. The nickname itself comes from immigrant Irish soldiers who fought during the American Civil War.

Notre Dame has always been known as an Ivy League School but what few people have come to realize is how their athletic abilities do not rank far behind their education. Ten of their former players are in the Professional Football Hall of Fame and they have produced the most All-Americans of any college program. In football, they have had seven Heisman single trophy winners and since 1962, they have graduated 98.47 percent of their football players in four years. Notre Dame has also had the most players and coaches in the College Football Hall of Fame.

Notre Dame is not just a university for scholars but athletics as well.
