Touchdown Jesus is a nickname that was given to a very large mural of the resurrected Jesus holding up his arms above his head entitled “The Word of Life.” The Touchdown Jesus mural is located on the wall of the library next to the Notre Dame Stadium. The mural of Jesus looks just like that of a touchdown signal of a referee with raised arms. The mural can be easily seen from the stands by the many people who attend and frequent football games at the stadium located in Notre Dame, Indiana, on the popular school campus of the University of Notre Dame.
There are many different forms of Touchdown Jesus throughout the country. A statue of Jesus with upraised arms, called the "King of Kings," sits waist deep in a Church pond next to I-75 in Ohio. Another Jesus statue stands in Jackson Square, New Orleans and has also been nicknamed Touchdown Jesus.
A book is currently being published and sold in paperback form. It is published by Westminster Public Relations and is now on sale for $19.96. The book is called “The Mixing of Sacred and Secular in American History” by author R. Laurence Moore and has the Touchdown Jesus mural on the cover. R. Laurence Moore is a Professor of American Studies. Although Moore says, “religion is everywhere” he continues to believe and shares religious differences as it relates to sacred versus secular beliefs.
