Touchdown Jesus!

Jesus with outstretched arms, depicting the risen Christ is one of the most precious symbols to Christianity. A large mosaic at Notre Dame University named “The Word of Life” watches over the football stadium. Notre Dame Fighting Irish Football players strive towards the depiction of “Touchdown Jesus” as quickly as possible. Hesburgh Library is the outside home of this mural of Jesus.

This “Word of Life” mural envisioned by Millard Sheets will make an impression on everyone that views this masterpiece. Inspiration from First John chapter one stimulated the artist's imagination. Wanting to ensure his creation would last lifetimes; Sheets looked to using various colors of granite.

Engineering produced the unthinkable; cutting curves in the stonework believed to be impossible. This mural of Jesus, the many facets of Old and New Testament figures, as well as Christian historical moments are designed around the risen Christ to reflect Jesus is at the heart of Christianity. The 134 feet high by 68 feet wide depiction of Christianity towers high and over looks the stadium, the Basilica of the Sacred Heart, and the great dome of Notre Dame. The face of Jesus is nine feet long, giving you the impression He can see all.

“Touchdown Jesus” is as much a part of Notre Dame Football tradition as attending Mass. The Basilica of the Sacred Heart’s Lady Chapel is the place to be before any game. Mass is said privately for the Fighting Irish Team. Security is tight at Lady Chapel. Protected away form enthusiastic fans, players attend Mass and receive Holy Communion before rushing into an excited crowd for their grant entrance.
