The Fighting Irish

Notre Dame is located in Indiana. It is a private Roman Catholic research college. In 1972 the college went co-ed. The Fighting Irish is the nickname for the University of Notre Dame sports teams. This nickname was adopted in 1920. There are many different sports areas associated with the fighting Irish team. For instance they have fencing, football, woman's soccer, men's tennis, woman's basket ball, men's golf, ice hockey and more. Of course the most famous of the Fighting Irish is the football team.

The nickname was said to come from the Irish immigrant soldiers who fought in the civil war. The football team has won 11 national championships. It has also had seven Heisman trophy winners and 62 members added to the College football hall of fame. This team has the 2nd highest wins for its division. They have produced the most All-American players in NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) Division One Teams. There have been books and movies done on this football team.

The least heard about team the Fighting Irish have would be the Men's ice hockey Team. This team was started in 1912 and a part time varsity sport and part time club. In 1968 They made it all varsity sports and enters the divisional level 1 teams. They got to enter there first conference in 1971. Joining the WCHA (Western Collegiate Hockey Association) This lasted for only two years. They regained there status in 1988 and in 2004 got to enter there first NCAA tournament.
